Racial inequities in housing and school funding go hand in hand. Districts catering to affluent White families are better funded by far compared to schools with predominantly Black and brown children. This is clearly the case in San Mateo County. The Housing Leadership Council of San Mateo will cover how districts have been drawn up, California public school (under)funding mechanisms, and how the difference is made up in affluent communities. Most importantly, they will dispel myths on how building more homes put a strain on the school district. The opposite is true: more homes brings better per student funding. Cities like Cupertino and Pasadena have seen enrollment go down drastically and schools closed as housing costs become out of reach for families.
